posted: May-03-2010 VPTA Central District members present poster at 2010 Combined Sections Meeting
Melissa Banta, PT, DPT, Anne Chan, PT, DPT, NCS, Amber Devers, PT, DPT, and Matt Wilks, PT, MSPT were chosen to display their poster presentation titled “Implementation and Compliance with Use of Standardized Outcome Measures in an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility” at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting in February in San Diego, CA. All four therapists work at Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Centers and created a program utilizing physical therapy clinical outcome measures other than the FIM. Occupational therapists and speech therapists also participate in tracking outcome measures at both locations of Sheltering Arms Hospital . The research was based on an article published in Physical Therapy by Jette, et al. (2009) which found that therapists in an inpatient rehabilitation facility were less likely than therapists in outpatient or home health settings to use clinical outcome measures.
Tracking these outcome measures required a cultural change for the therapists in this setting. The outcomes tracking program was created to ready the organization for performance initiatives as well to create more clinical research opportunities. Therapists also felt that use of these measures helped improve patients’ understanding of their goals and plan of care. At the end of the study period, almost all PT’s and PTA’s were able to collect at least one outcome measure on each patient, but continued to have less compliance collecting follow-up outcome measures on all patients. Therapists from various settings visiting the poster at CSM either echoed the results presented in the poster or felt motivated to conduct a similar program.
