First, we are thrilled about the new VPTA committee restructuring! Welcome Michele Wiley to the Membership Committee and we’re thankful for Maria Kuran for stepping up and helping the Nominating Committee. Additionally, thanks to all of the Northern District members who attended and participated in the Retreat at Virginia Crossing in April.
We had a terrific meeting on March 16, 2010 hosted generously by Northern Virginia Community College Medical Campus in Springfield, VA. Dr. Derek Ochiai, Associate Master Instructor of Hip Arthroscopy spoke on the Treatment of the Hip’s Acetabular Labrum. The 40 people in attendance including PT/PTA students, clinicians, faculty members, and students to be gave the meeting great reviews. Our next meeting is May 5, 2010 at Marymount University (MU). There will be poster presentations in the hall by MU students prior to the meeting. As a teaser, one of our speakers is Rebecca Schumer, SPT speaking on Lisfranc Injury. She presented at CSM this year. We will also be talking about many other interesting topics such as this year’s RCs. We look forward to seeing you there!
Northern Virginians attended LegislativeDay in full force bringing students, PTAs, and PTs to storm Richmond. We gave special thanks to Sydney Sawyer and ALL 13 of the NVCC students including but not limited to Eddy, Henna, Ryan, Rocio, Sheena, Yvonne, Simone, Wilma, Deirdre, Anne, Marina, Paris, and Angela who attended. In total, Northern Virginia had over 20 PTs, PTAs, and students in attendance. You were truly an integral part of getting Term Protection through the legislature.
We are getting excited about 2010's VPTA Annual Conference October 15-17 in HERNDON, VA. We’ve been planning and spreading the good news about the conference and the 18-hole golf tournament on October 14 at Pleasant Valley Golf Course touting a 4 man captain's choice with shotgun. Please contact Secili DeStefano if you are interested in attending or volunteering.
Hip hip hurray to Sydney Sawyer and Diana Venskus who lead a Northern District collection for suppliesforHaiti. MU PT students collected used/new orthopedic supplies to send to Haiti for support relief efforts. Hanger prosthetics shipped materials (http://www.hanger.com/Pages/HaitiRelief.aspx;).
Northern District also began a process of Strategic Planning that should be completed by our summermeeting on July 11, 2010 including plans for the next 1-5 years. So far we examined the survey that VPTA did including 350 members/respondents, applied it to Northern, presented it to the members in attendance at the meeting, received membership feedback, and are in process of implementing member ideas for how to proceed in the coming years.
Thanks Northern PTs, PTAs, and students for supporting community activities and walks such as the Arthritis Walks in Loudoun County May 16, 2010 and a memorial walk for a Northern VPTA therapist on April 18, 2010. For more information visit http://www.potomacriverrunning.com/http://www.active.com/running/burke-va/rockstar-run-8k-and-1-mile-fun-runwalk-2010 and
Driving through the Mountain District one can’t help but notice the beauty of Spring. Early flowers like daffodils & tulips, flowering trees such as pears and red buds bless us with new colors and hope of things to come.
So it is with our Mountain District Membership as we look to the new committee restructuring of VPTA. Allow me to “Plant some seeds” for you to volunteer. There are several new job openings with small to medium time commitments that have a great IMPACT on how our district grows. Some jobs are brief monthly commitments & others are once yearly events (as follows):
District PT Month Task Force: Assist the District Chair and Director to Coordinate and plan a district & state-wide “Anything that Moves Your Forwards” event October 23rd.
District Legislative Liaisons (Open position for more than one person): Ever hear about health-care reform or Term Protection and have contacted your representative to express an opinion? Do you know any of our State Legislators? Upcoming elections are a great time to contact your legislators and we need more volunteers in this area.
District Continuing Education Chair: Great opportunity to get involved as our current Chair Kim Slemp, PT will mentor you into this position. Help plan with state wide contacts and organize CE events for our district. Upcoming event planed for November “CI Credentialing Course”.
Host a District Meeting: Our 2011 Calendar is starting to fill up. Contact District Chair Wil Kolb, PT, CWS at wkolb12@gmail.com if you would like to sponsor a event.
Reminder also that Mountain District Chair and Treasure positions are up for election this year. Both are two year terms.
Additional meeting plans for 2010 include: May 18th joint Mountain-Valley District meeting at Radford University Featuring Delegate Dave Nutter. September Mountain District meeting at Wytheville Community College being broadcast on the web to three other satellite campus locations. November 2nd meeting will be hosted by Function Better Therapy and Chuck Williams, PT.
Special thanks to Barret Blevins, PT, DPT for hosting our last district meeting at Johnson Memorial Outpatient. A top Quality presentation on Shoulder Surgery and Rehabilitation with open discussion was provided by Orthopedist Dr. Daniel Miliam. (see photo) Additional thanks to Julia Jackson King, Debbie Clark and Greg Cornforth for participation in VPTA annual retreat at Richmond April 16th to 18th. (See picture) See you soon at a Mountain District Event – Time to go water some seeds…..Please enter news article...

VPTA Central District members present poster at 2010 Combined Sections Meetingposted: May-03-2010
Melissa Banta, PT, DPT, Anne Chan, PT, DPT, NCS, Amber Devers, PT, DPT, and Matt Wilks, PT, MSPT were chosen to display their poster presentation titled “Implementation and Compliance with Use of Standardized Outcome Measures in an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility” at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting in February in San Diego, CA. All four therapists work at Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Centers and created a program utilizing physical therapy clinical outcome measures other than the FIM. Occupational therapists and speech therapists also participate in tracking outcome measures at both locations of Sheltering Arms Hospital . The research was based on an article published in Physical Therapy by Jette, et al. (2009) which found that therapists in an inpatient rehabilitation facility were less likely than therapists in outpatient or home health settings to use clinical outcome measures.
Tracking these outcome measures required a cultural change for the therapists in this setting. The outcomes tracking program was created to ready the organization for performance initiatives as well to create more clinical research opportunities. Therapists also felt that use of these measures helped improve patients’ understanding of their goals and plan of care. At the end of the study period, almost all PT’s and PTA’s were able to collect at least one outcome measure on each patient, but continued to have less compliance collecting follow-up outcome measures on all patients. Therapists from various settings visiting the poster at CSM either echoed the results presented in the poster or felt motivated to conduct a similar program.

PHYSICAL THERAPY and PHYSIOTHERAPY are now protected terms!!! posted: Mar-15-2010
Governor McDonnell signed our Term Protection legislation into law!
Effective July 1 2010 only institutions/companies that have PT/PTA’s performing Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy may advertise it.
This means that if the health services are provided by a non PT/PTA, those services can not be advertised as Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy. This is a huge step forward for the profession as we now not only have title protection, but also term protection!
The board in conjunction with the legislative committee will be developing appropriate actions for potential violations.
Please note that the law goes into effect July 1, 2010 and does not apply to any advertising done retroactively from Dec 31,2009 or before.
A huge thank you to the 450+ members of the Term Protection coalition and everyone that gave input, contacted your legislator, and assisted with this momentous project. This could not have been accomplished with out your help.
