New Term and Title Protection Guidance is now available!

This year we enacted term protection legislation that protects the term "Physical Therapy" in advertising. We want to provide our members with the infomation and tools to take action when confronted with inappropriate advertising or the inappropriate use of the title PT or PTA. In many cases, through simple notification and education, such practices can be stopped.

To download this toolkit, please login for access to template letters and further quidance.

PHYSICAL THERAPY and PHYSIOTHERAPY are now protected terms!!!

Governor McDonnell signed our Term Protection legislation into law!

Effective July 1 2010 only institutions/companies that have PT/PTA’s performing Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy may advertise it.

This means that if the health services are provided by a non PT/PTA, those services can not be advertised as Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy.   This is a huge step forward for the profession as we now not only have title protection, but also term protection!

The board in conjunction with the legislative committee will be developing appropriate actions for potential violations.

Please note that the law goes into effect July 1, 2010 and does not apply to any advertising done retroactively from Dec 31,2009 or before.

A huge thank you to the 450+ members of the Term Protection coalition and everyone that gave input, contacted your legislator, and assisted with this momentous project. This could not have been accomplished with out your help.
